Getting Crafty Up in Here
To celebrate the recent running of the Kentucky Derby, our
friends Keeli and Jake decided to have a bunch of folks over and throw a lovely
Derby party/brunch. Keeli really went
all out making the house look gorgeous and preparing an absolutely amazing meal
for all of us.
Some of the beautiful decorations.
Our hostess with the most-est!
Um, yes, we ate shrimp
and grits AND chicken and waffles,
all homemade and delicious!
In keeping with the theme, guests to the party were
encouraged to don their Derby finest.
While it was relatively easy to find a bow tie to round out Chris’
attire, for me, that meant making a Derby hat!
After a quick stop at Target for a wide-brimmed black hat, it was off to
Michael’s for craft supplies, namely lots of silk flowers, a bow, and some
florist wire.
My impromptu bouquet
When we made it home for the evening, we flipped on the
Lightning game and work commenced!*
The hat, sans
decoration
I started with the bow and some of the bigger blossoms,
placing them along the side of the hat and securing them into place with
florist wire, wrapped around the stems and then threaded through the gaps in
the weave of the hat.
Unfortunately, the biggest hydrangea I picked was just too
large to fit well on the hat, so I’m saving it for some other project that will
surely come along in the near future. I
also added a few leaves behind the blossoms for some visual greenery space.
After the flowers were secured, I added additional
architectural elements, including the blue spirals and white, round fuzzies**
to help embellish the look a bit more.
The final shot the
night before the party.
Before we headed over to Keeli and Jake’s house, I had Chris
take a few pics of me in the backyard, showing off my handiwork:
So what if I can’t see? That’s not important.
A better side view.
Ready to go in his Derby finest!
Having a great time at
the party!
Later!

* After work, picking
up our veggie box and beer at the growler bar at Whole Foods, reclaiming my car
from the repair shop, eating dinner at a local Italian place, and stopping to
procure the previously-referenced bow tie.
** Yes, you may call them fuzzy balls. I have no problem with that.
